Rubi Du – Colourblind
‘Colourblind’ is the first single from New Zealand Samoan-Jamaican roots reggae and dancehall artist Rubi Du’s forthcoming debut album, The Grow Room, arriving via Low Key Source. Formerly known as Silva MC, Rubi Du’s electrifying live performances and studio skills as a vocalist and emcee have, over the last six years, secured her status as the Queen of Aotearoa’s Roots and Dancehall scenes.
Originally written as a poem, ‘Colourblind’ took shape after Rubi Du met the multi-award-winning Māori actor and multi-genre musician Troy Kingi, who offered to produce it. The song’s gentle, reggae-soul lilt and escapist sentiment are a perfectly poised example of one artist letting another coax them out of their comfort zone. “Long story short, Troy Kingi pulled out his guitar, took my poem and turned it into one of my favourite songs I’ve ever released,” explains Rubi Du. “It’s different from my usual heavy roots or hip hop vibe. I’ll leave it up to the listener to decipher the lyrics.”
Kingi also features on backing vocals and instrumentation. The single was recorded between Big Pop Studios and Aesium Music House in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, mixed by Christoph El Truento and mastered by Down Beat Mastering. “Troy is a living reminder that as artists we must continue to push our musical boundaries. My hope is that when you listen to ‘Colourblind’ you find a little peace,” says Rubi Du.
‘Colourblind’ is accompanied by a music video directed by Luke Bates and filmed at Cool Cool Studios. Featuring two dancers, Tamsin and Zarah, makeup by Gee Gee and clothing provided by Public Library, Adidas, Alpha Industries, and Pat Menzies, the video was produced by Rubi Du. Special thanks to Teremoana, Matilda and Lucy-Mae for their guidance and contribution to the video.
