GC OCONNOR – LYING
Five months after dropping her smoked-out, downtempo singalong ‘Sunday Best’, GC OConnor presents her latest standalone single ‘Lying’, due for release through Low Key Source.
“So why do we bother to lie with each other? Guess we lie to each other to be kind.” – GC OConnor
A masterclass in modern neo soul, ‘Lying’ taps into the same Soulquarian traditions D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, and Bilal steeped themselves in during the late 1990s/early 2000s. At the same time, it continues to situate her alongside the likes of Ella Haber, Nai Palm, Wallace and Noah Slee, as part of a still-rising wave of antipodean musicians with one ear trained on the past, and the other listening out for the future of soul music.
Supported by a hip-hugging rhythm section and golden-toned guitars and keyboards crafted by her longtime collaborator, the selector, musician and producer Loraio, the song’s low-slung instrumental hits the sweet spot.
Delivered in her distinctive and vulnerable style, ‘Lying’ was co-written with the Grammy Award winning musician, Ryan Shaw, on a spring day in a north London studio owned by former Michael Jackson keyboard player, Mo Pleasure. Across the song, GC OConnor sings vividly about how unexpected connections can slow down time, reflecting on lying to each other while lying together with a sultry but bittersweet swagger.
“‘Lying’ is really a love letter to fleeting moments, to the nicety of not going too deep, to the beauty in being someone else FOR someone else for a moment” – GC OConnor
